PAINTING with Barbara Danser
Zion is noted for its huge monolithic White Cliffs and wind-sculpted mounds of Navajo Sandstone formed over 200 million years and carved out by ancient seas and rivers. Numerous trails climb to the high ridges above; others follow the Virgin River’s edge, surrounded by rock faces nearly 1,800 feet high filled with hanging water gardens; additional trails start at the Narrows and explore a series of slot canyons extending for miles. Entrance to the Park is through the spectacular Pine Creek tunnel built 5,607 feet through solid rock with view windows along route.
Capitol Reef, ablaze with
red, gold and white formations of rock dating back in geologic history 800
million years, has an unusual Waterpocket Fold, a wrinkle in the earth’s c Includes: For more information and to make a reservation, send an e-mail to Barbara Danser at bd@danserart.com with your name, address and phone number.

Artists with painting experience are welcome to join this art workshop retreat, to establish and pursue their individual goals and to have fun. At Ghost Ranch following breakfast, we will gather to share a Native American ritual, welcoming the new day, after which we will depart to a location to paint and sketch. Topics will include all aspects of painting in the landscape, colors and light of the Southwest and Nature painted from within.
Evenings will be a time of sharing and relaxation. At Ghost Ranch each of us will have the opportunity to introduce a topic of choice to the group. Participants in past workshops initiated the following discussions and exercises: the life and art of Georgia O’Keeffe, poetry, discussions of favorite passages in a book, Native American philosophy and way of life, alternative methods of healing, spontaneous writing to music, Nature’s simplicity in art, Yoga, other interesting topics and a twelve-circuit labyrinth walk under the stars. Video equipment, a slide projector and screen, and an audio cassette player will be available for our use.

The historic town of Taos, nestled at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico, will be the central location for this seven-day art workshop, featuring in-town adobe and garden sites as well as excursions into the surrounding landscape.
In Taos we will be staying at a spacious and charming adobe Bed & Breakfast Inn, the Mabel Dodge Luhan House (pictured right), where Georgia O’Keeffe, Willa Cather, John Marin, D. H. Lawrence, Thornton Wilder, Spud Johnson and other avant-garde artists and writers lived starting in the 1920’s. We will occupy their charming rooms and have as well the Gatehouse, all with fireplaces, sitting areas and a kitchen.
. . . All true artists are thus engaged in filling themselves out, and what they produce in doing so we call art. Real art has the man in it, the spirit, the wish, and the courage that spin out of himself those qualities he needs to satisfy the discontent in him, and the artist is the greatest of us all in these divine athletics of self-creation.
SONG OF
THE LARK . . . What was any art but a mold in which to imprison for a moment the shining elusive element which is life itself - life hurrying past us and running away, too strong to stop, too sweet to lose.
